The sea watch was cut short by the persistent drizzle which also prevented me from doing my usual circuit of The Desert. 

Marsh Harrier from Hanson this morning

Mid morning from Hanson of note 2 Marsh Harriers, a Common Swift among the many Swallows, Sand and House Martins, 2 Common Sandpipers and 3 Garganey among the usual eclipse wildfowl I couldn't find the Pectoral Sandpiper.

Osprey over Burrowes this morning

On the reserve 2 Cattle Egrets from the entrance track. While walking towards Makepiece with MH the Osprey flew over Christmas Dell towards Dengemarsh then reappeared over Burrowes a few minutes later. From Makepiece  2 Little stints among 6 Dunlin and a Ringed Plover, also the female Goldeneye has reappeared today

Late morning at Scotney the usual Greylag, Canada, Barnacle and Egyptian Geese were joined on the sward by 2 Ruff, 48 Curlew and 69 Golden Plover.

At Galloways an big improvement on yesterday, at least 8 Whinchat, 6 Stonechats, a Chiffchaff and a Common Whitethroat.

Denge Marsh Gully was an avian free zone this afternoon, Denge Marsh though held 5 Great White Egrets, 148 Golden Plover, 4 Ruff, c200 Lapwing, another Common Swift and all the usual wildfowl.

Another 30 minute sea watch from the fishing boats saw basically exactly the same as this morning with addition of a Common Swift flying out to sea.

Great White Egret from Hanson late this afternoon

As I walked up to Hanson late this afternoon all the birds were flushed from the islands, looking around the Osprey appeared over the Tower Pits and headed off towards Lydd. From the hide the Pectoral Sandpiper had reappeared on the islands, a Great White Egret was posing, 2 Common Sandpipers, a Green Sandpiper, a Garganey still also a Curlew Sandpiper dropped in very briefly.

 Between sea watches I spent an hour taking a stroll around The Desert getting rather wet in the constant drizzle, apart from a couple of Wheatears, Stonechats, 2 Black Redstarts and a Tit flock very little was seen.

Soggy Wheatear Denge Marsh Gully

Lunchtime in Denge Marsh Gully a Wheatear was the only bird of note which was more than I saw in Galloways. 3 Great White Egrets could be seen on Denge Marsh from Springfield Bridge.

On the ARC from Hanson early afternoon, of note 4 Ruff, the Pectoral Sandpiper still present as were 2 Common Sandpiper and 3 Garganey among the usual wildfowl, sadly the Curlew Sandpipers had been flushed by a Marsh Harrier, 3 Little Egrets and another Great White Egret were also present. Over the road near Boulderwall farm at least 2 Cattle egrets present.

With white bases to tail and tail projection I'm guessing heavy Arctic but open to suggestions.

 Redstart in The Desert

Another good day at Dungeness started with a Greenshank over the house while I was covering the MV, then around The Point, with 3 Redstarts, 5 Whinchats, 7 Wheatears, 5+Yellow Wagtails, 4 Tree Pipits one of which landed briefly on the Buddleia in the observatory garden, 3 Spotted Flycatchers, 10+ Common Whitethroats, 4 Lesser Whitethroats, 3 Blackcaps, 5 Willow Warblers, a Chiffchaff, a few Hirundines and 2 Sparrowhawks.

 Late this afternoon from Hanson the Pectoral Sandpiper was on the old Cormorant island, still at least 2 Garganey present as were 4 Avocets and an Osprey which was watched distantly fishing over the Kerton Road pits.

This evening on the reserve 2 Spoonbills were on Burrowes, also 2 Great White Egrets, 3 Little Egrets, 6 Ringed Plovers, 4 Dunlin and Common Sandpipers. From the entrance track near Boulderwall 2+ Cattle Egrets in the ditches.

Arctic Skua: between 14 and 24(?) max flock size 9, so much harrying of Sandwich Terns very difficult to be sure, almost certainly some overlap.

Juvenile Peregrine on Power station pylon this morning

A walk around the lighthouse bushes and The Desert area saw of note 4 Whinchat, 14+ Wheatear, 2 Redstarts, 20+ Common Whitethroat, 7+ Lesser Whitethroat, 6+ Blackcap, 8+ Willow Warbler, a Chiffchaff, 2 Black Redstarts, a Sparrowhawk and an adult and juvenile Peregrine on the pylons.

As MH had seen 4 Cattle Egrets drop into Denge Marsh I called into the reserve on my way home for breakfast. From the entrance track 5 Cattle Egrets could be seen. I watched an adult bird catch a what I believe was a Water Vole, it shook it violently, and beat it on the ground before swallowing it whole.

In several visits to the ARC the Pectoral Sandpiper was still present, 4+ Common Sandpipers, 24 Black-tailed Godwits, 6 Dunlin, 2 Common Snipe, 3 Garganey, 22 Little Egrets, 4 Great White Egrets, small numbers of Hirundines and a single Swift. In the Willow Trail 2 Spotted Flycatchers and a Great-spotted Woodpecker.

On the reserve an influx of Common Sandpipers late afternoon with 14 on the ARC and at least 8 on Burrowes, also 26 Black-tailed Godwits, 36 Dunlin, 2 Green Sandpipers, 2 Redshanks, 2 Greenshanks, 6 Ringed Plovers, the Pectoral Sandpiper still present, 3+ Garganey, 6+ Great white Egrets and still plenty of Swallows, Sand and House Martins along with all the eclipse wildfowl.

White Storks!

I joined AJG in a walk around The Desert, the highlights were 8 Wheatears, 3 Whinchats, a few Meadow Pipits and Yellow Wagtails over and 4 Black Redstarts  around West Beach. 

With news of 2 White Storks at St Mary's in the Marsh but no location, I contacted CP who lives out that way, within a few minutes he called back with the location having found them. They took little notice of the plough and spent there time strutting around devouring worms. Both were colour ringed, one sported a green colour ring Z9404 it would seem they have escaped from a rehabilitation centre in Norfolk, but they are still nice to see.

This afternoon 12 Common Buzzards drifted south over Lydd. Late afternoon from Hanson the Pectoral Sandpiper was still showing along with 42 Black-tailed Godwits, 4+ Garganey and the usual wildfowl.

Very quiet avian wise around The Point, my wander around The Desert saw just a few Common Whitethroats, 3 Wheatears, 4 Black Redstarts, 6 Yellow Wagtails, a Ringed Plover over a handful of Swallows and the out bound female Hen Harrier.

I spent several hours sky watching from home where 19 Common Buzzards, 3 Marsh Harriers, 6 Sparrowhawks, 4 Hobby's, a Kestrel and several Yellow wagtails were noted.

When news of Melodious Warbler just down the road from me in Denge Marsh Gully late afternoon  broke, I was quickly on site, sadly there were no further sightings of the bird, just a couple of Willow Warblers, a Chiffchaff and a Common Whitethroat.
